Food Distribution
The Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living (MHSCHL), in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, offers a drive-thru food and produce distribution on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month. (Dates are subject to change depending on holiday closures). Allotment of food is based on family size and is open to community. To serve more families in need, registrants will only be able to participate once a month.
Diaper Distribution
In collaboration with Community Action Partnership OC, the MHSCHL offers a drive-thru Diaper and Pull Ups distribution to Orange County residents on the fourth Thursday of every month. (Dates subject to change for holiday closures). Families in need can register to receive free diapers (sizes: 0-6) and Pull-Ups (sizes 2T-5T) for up to five children in the household. Integrative Health Classes
The MHSCHL offers free health and wellness classes to promote healthy habits, reduce stress, support mental health, and build community. These classes can help prevent or manage chronic conditions and improve overall health outcomes. See the full list of classes below. When you're feeling unwell, it can be difficult to tell these respiratory illnesses apart because they share so many "overlap" symptoms like congestion and fatigue. However, the intensity and the speed of onset are usually the biggest clues.
🤧 Common Cold
Colds usually stay "above the neck." Symptoms develop slowly over a few days. The main symptoms are a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and a scratchy sore throat. The intensity is more mild. You might feel "under the weather," but you can usually go about your day. A fever is very rare in adults.
🤒 The Flu
The flu is notorious for hitting you all at once. You might feel fine in the morning and be bedridden by the afternoon. The main symptoms are high fever of 100º to 102º, severe body aches, and "bone-deep" exhaustion. The intensity is high. It often feels like you’ve been hit by a truck. A cough (usually dry) can be quite painful or persistent.
😷 COVID-19
COVID-19 symptoms can look exactly like a cold or flu, but they often last longer and can affect other systems in the body. The main symptoms are fever, dry cough, and shortness of breath. Unique markers are a sudden loss of taste or smell (though less common with newer variants) and gastrointestinal issues like nausea or diarrhea. The onset of symptoms can appear anywhere from 2 to 14 days after exposure.

Our breast imaging services are among the most advanced in the nation. Recognized by the American College of Radiology for excellence in breast imaging and named in the top 1% of Mammography Imaging Nationwide, we offer patients the highest level of diagnostic accuracy. We are also one of the few centers to integrate AI technology in mammogram readings, at no additional cost to patients, enhancing accuracy and early detection.
Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery
A pioneer in robotic-assisted surgery, Hoag has performed more than 35,000 procedures using the da Vinci® Surgical System, making us a national leader in minimally invasive techniques. Designated a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery, we offer highly specialized care for many gynecologic conditions including fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic organ prolapse, and complex hysterectomies. We perform many cases that are often too advanced for other institutions in the region.
Center of Excellence in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Hoag's Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Program is the first in the world to be designated as a Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). Hoag has been a pioneer in this field since 2008, when the program was established under the leadership of Melvin J. Silverstein, MD, Gross Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery. Hoag performs the highest volume of oncoplastic procedures in Southern California and is home to the first stand-alone Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Fellowship in the United States. With oncoplastic surgery, patients are offered options they often wouldn’t receive elsewhere. At Hoag, it’s not just about removing cancer, it’s about treating the whole person.
